Surete (Sûreté)

A French term for civil police force used as a title for the police groups of South Vietnam. The Michigan State University Group police administration staff provided material aid, training, and consultation to the South Vietnamese law enforcement agencies assigned to internal security. This aid achieved mixed results. The university staff successfully introduced modern criminology equipment and techniques, but also became involved in bureaucratic infighting with South Vietnam's president, Ngô Đình Diệm, and two American agencies, the United States Operations Mission (USOM) and the Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG).
